About project

Project realization has a main purpose: restitution and keeping maintance of biodiversity of xerothermic habitats (especially xerothermic grasslands) and species connected with them in 12 Natura 2000 sites in Miechowska Upland in Małopolska.

Miechowska Upland is situated in north part of Małopolska voivodeship, with total area approximately 960 km² and is almost totaly coverd by loes sediments. It’s generaly agricultural area, with aproximately 79% farmlands and 12% forests. The most unique feature of this upland are xerothermic grasslands 6210 – Festuco-Brometea, warm forests and shrubs. In those habitats there is a lot of rare pecies (close to 54 strictly protected species), for example: Ophrys insectifera (VU – vulnerable), Carlina onopordifolia (VU – vulnerable), Adenophora lilifolia, Linum flavum, Adonis vernalis, Cypripedium calceolus (VU – vulnerable), Cerasus fruticosa (VU – vulnerable). To protect rare habitats and species, there are created nature reserves and Natura 2000 sites. Main project aims are: restoration of xerothermic grasslands, return to extensive use of land, sheep pasturage, strengthen of local population of endangered species, engagement of local communities. Those activities will provide sustainable development of Miechowska Upland and conservation of priority habitats.

The main activites in project are:

  • nature investigation in 12 Natura 2000 sites in Miechowska Upland,
  • creation of 12 management plans for Natura 2000 sites,
  • active protection of xerothermic habitats (cutting trees, shrubs, mowing, removal of alien species
  • and garbage),
  • purchase of sheeps and goats and active protection by sheeps grazing,
  • purchase of valuable Natura 2000 sites,
  • development of tourism infrastructure,
  • monitoring of active protection,
  • promotion and information about project: meetings, conferences, publications

 Project rates are:

  • protection and restoration  of xerothermic grasslands and species,
  • creation of 12 local management plans for Natura 200 sites,
  • restoration of exstensive land use – sheeps grazing on xerothermic habitats,
  • turism infrastructure (educational trials, information tables),
  • purchase valuable sites,
